On October 4, 2023, Elsevier and the team of Professor John R.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University released "World's Top 2% Scientists".
The list selects the world's Top 2% scientists from 22 fields and 174 subdisciplines based on a comprehensive assessment of nearly 7 million scientists based on the Scopus database based on the number of citations, h-index, co-author-adjusted hm-index, and citations to articles by sole or first author. The list is designed to provide a measure of a scientist's long-term scientific performance and to provide a more objective and realistic reflection of a scientist's output and academic impact.
The lists include the Lifetime Science Impact List which focuses on the impact of a scientist's entire academic career to date, and the Annual Science Impact List which focuses on academic accomplishments in the year 2022.
