The review article "Silicon-Based Graphene Electro-Optical Modulators" on the research progress of integrated silicon-based graphene modulators by the Center's graduate students, Ming Jin, Ziyi Wei (M.S.), Yuansheng Tao, and postdoctoral fellows, Yanfang Meng, Haowen Shu, and Bowen Bai, was was recently published in the journal Photonics.
Starting from the introduction of the basic principle of silicon-based graphene electro-optical modulator, the article systematically reviews the development of silicon-based graphene electro-optical modulator in terms of its performance, fabrication process and device structure, and exhaustively summarizes the development of graphene electro-optical modulator under single and double-layer structure, electro-absorptive phase-modulation structure and multiple material systems. Meanwhile, the article summarizes and discusses its capability and potential functions in application scenarios such as high and low temperature environments, long range communication, microwave photonics, etc. Finally, it also provides an outlook on the future direction of silicon-based graphene electro-optic modulators, and the problems they may face.
